Crowns/Bridges

Crowns/Bridges

If you have lost a tooth or want to replace the damaged tooth immediately, there are two most effective treatments in Cosmetic Dentistry. These include Dental Crowns and Bridges. Let’s know about both the dental treatments in detail.

What are Dental Crowns?

Dental Crowns are a cap or cover used to put over the tooth. It is used to improve the shape, size, and function of the teeth. Moreover, it also strengthens the teeth. It improves the cavities when the tooth is not eligible for fillings. The other reason that can be cured by dental crown involves improving cracked teeth, having just undergone a root canal treatment, or concealing a badly shaped or discolored tooth.

What are Dental Bridges?

A Dental Bridge consists of two or more crowns that replace the missing teeth. These crowns can be made of materials like alloys, porcelain, gold, or a combination of both. The purpose of bridges is to bridge the gap between the missing teeth. It is either supported by natural teeth or by implants. The fake teeth that replace the natural teeth are called Pontics.

Types of Crowns and Bridges

Dental Crowns are made of four different types of materials that include:

Porcelain Fused To Metal

It is a combination of porcelain and metal and is relatively sturdy than standard porcelain material.

Gold Alloys

This type of Crown is a mixture of gold and copper. It is sturdy as it is not fractured or worn off, thereby being highly durable.

Ceramics

It is used to fix front teeth since it resembles the color of natural teeth.

Base Metal Alloys

These types of metals are highly corrosive, which makes is relatively robust. It is effective because, in this type of Crown, only a few teeth are removed.

Similarly, there are four types of Bridges, traditional, cantilever, Maryland, and implant-supported bridges.

Procedure for Crowns and Bridges

The procedure involved in Dental Crown is extremely simple. During the first visit, the dentist will investigate and prepare your teeth for the treatment. He will take an X-ray and impressions of the tooth. This impression is sent to the lab for constructing a crown. In the second visit, your dentist will place the crown appropriately and enhance your smile.

The procedure of Dental Bridges is similar to that of Dental Crown. During the first trip, the preparation and investigation will be done, and impressions will be taken. The second visit will be for placing the bridges. The most crucial part is to take care of the bridge. So, you need to visit the dentist for the follow-up process.
